Chubb Rock Biography
Chubb Rock (born Richard Simpson on May 28th, 1968 in Jamaica) is a Newyork-based rapper who released several commercially successful hip-hop albums in the early 1990's. His stage name is thought to be inspired by the name of "Chuck Robb", although this is most likely more of a clever play on words than a tribute to the politician. The rapper, who was a pre-med student, dropped out of Brown University to pursue his musical career.
His 1991 release entitled The One, reached #13 on Billboard's Top Hip-Hop chart for that year. Three singles from that release, Treat'em Right, Just The Two Of Us, and The Chubbster, made it to #1 on Billboard's Top Rap Single chart list for the same year. The following year saw the release of I Gotta Get Mine Yo, a release which features guest performances from Grand Puba Maxwell, Poke, and Rob Swinga. This release also helped fledgling music producers Trackmasters, on their rise to prominence, as they handled production duties on the recording. Chubb Rock was also a member of the 1995 incarnation of the Crooklyn Dodgers, a rap act that also featured O.C. and Jeru The Damaja. Chubb Rock's work in the 2000s has been limited to only a few songs. He appears on a song for Raptivism Records' "No More Prisons" project with Lil' Dap of Group Home and Edo G, and also worked with Mr. Len on the song "Dummy Smacks" where he says, "Some people thought I was gone... never that!"
Weighing in at 250 pounds, Chubb Rock often evokes images of a hip-hop Barry White (whom he dueted with on And the Winner Is...). Chubb Rock had a group while he was a teenager in New York but started his career in earnest after he dropped out of college. After three singles from his first album went nowhere, his second album, And the Winner Is..., was released to greater commercial and critical acclaim, thanks to a remixed single version of "Caught Up&" that was released prior to the album. After 1991's One and 1992's I Gotta Get Mine Yo, Chubb Rock's career again faltered, and five years passed prior to the release of Mind.
