PARIS - Milos Raonic kept his long-shot hopes of a place in next weeks World Tour Finals alive, beating Robin Haase 6-3, 6-4 Wednesday in a second-round match at the Paris Masters. Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., has a long way to go if he is to somehow reach the year-end event starting in Monday London, which is limited to the best eight on the ATP Tour. Raonic stands a provisional 11th in the points race and must reach the final at the Bercy arena on Sunday if he is to have a chance to book a ticket to London. He would be the first Canadian to reach the finals in singles play, though Torontos Daniel Nestor has made multiple appearances in the doubles event of the season wrapup tournaments. Raonic finished with 14 aces against Haase and never faced a break point in just under an hour on court. "I felt like I played well," Raonic said. "I executed well and gave myself opportunities on the return side. I was solid with my service games. "But its a long way to go for London, there is a lot more tennis to play. The most important thing is to come tomorrow and give my best effort." Canadian doubles veteran Nestor ended his season with a loss alongside Leander Paes, as the seventh seeds went out in the first round to Mexicos Santiago Gonzalez and American Scott Lipsky 6-4, 6-3 in 50 minutes. Raonic, playing his first match since losing a Stockholm quarter-final this month, swept through the opening set in 27 minutes. The second set began with a break for Raonic, facing the Dutchman for the first time after Haase split two matches in as many weeks against Canadas Vasek Pospisil. That proved to be enough to ensure victory as Raonic advanced on the first of three match points. Raonic won his 45th match of the season and next face sixth seed Tomas Berdych, who is already in the year-end field. Raonic has won both of his matches against the Czech, most recently last September to take the Bangkok title. "I have to play well in that match," Raonic said. "Ive played well both times Ive faced him, Thats a big necessity for me. I have to play well and create opportunities. I cant change much, just play my way and dictate all I can." Though he led the Canucks to what was then a franchise record-shattering campaign in just his second season, Nonis was gone and replaced one year later.Hull signed Croatia striker Nikica Jelavic for a reported club-record fee on Wednesday in a deal that is unlikely to appease supporters amid the latest controversy engulfing the clubs outspoken Egyptian owner. Jelavic left Everton, where he had lost his first-team place, to move to Hull for a reported fee of 6.5 million pounds ($10.6 million) on a 3 1/2-year deal. "As soon as the manager called me, I realized straight away that he was really interested in signing me and that it is a great opportunity for me to come here," the 28-year-old Jelavic said. Jelavic is likely to be joined at the KC Stadium by another forward, Shane Long from West Bromwich Albion, in the coming days as Hull strengthens its attack for the second half of the season as the club battles to avoid relegation. Hull is 10th in the standings after a solid start to life back in Englands top division, but is just five points above the relegation zone. Many fans delight at their teams start to the season has been tempered by the recent comments of Hulls owner, Assem Allam, who has applied to the Football Association to change the clubs official name from Hull City AFC to Hull Tigers. On Tuesday, he threateened to quit the club within 24 hours if the FA rejects his application.dddddddddddd "No one on earth is allowed to question my business decisions. I wont allow it," Allam said in an interview with Sky Sports. "Im here to save the club and manage the club for the benefit of the community. It will never be the other way round -- take it from me." Allam, who is reported to have injected around 70 million pounds ($115 million) into the northern club since rescuing it from financial ruin in 2010, wants to rebrand Hull to boost its marketability abroad. Retaining its Premier League status will be key to that appeal, and the signing of Jelavic could clearly help a side that has scored only 22 goals in 21 league games this season. Jelavic has largely been used as a substitute at Everton this season following the loan signing of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea. He previously played for Hajduk Split, Rapid Vienna and Rangers. "I can see straight away that there is a lot of ambition here within the club and I hope that we can build on the great start to the season and become a really strong Premier League team over the coming years," Jelavic said. cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
